Three patterns behind the body count

The graves below are not random. Read the dataset and the same three stories keep repeating.

The roll-up era

$210M

the deal that buried a portfolio

Between 2022 and 2025, software roll-ups (chiefly Carbon6 and Threecolts) bought up a large share of the independent seller-tool ecosystem. After SPS Commerce acquired Carbon6 in early 2025 for roughly $210M, most of the acquired brands were retired within a year.

Death by redirect

0

shutdown announcements for most of these deaths

Most seller tools never announce a shutdown. The usual pattern: the blog goes quiet, the checkout breaks, and one day the domain silently redirects to the acquirer’s product page. That is why every grave below links to hard evidence: an announcement, news coverage, or an archived snapshot.

What it means for your stack

35%

of these deaths followed an ownership change

A striking share of these tools died within a couple of years of an ownership change. If a tool you rely on gets acquired, treat annual-plan renewals with caution, export your data early, and line up a replacement before you are forced to.

Went down with the Viral Launch ship.

Viral Launch's free listing split-testing tool let sellers rotate prices, titles, and images since 2016. It survived right up to the end: still archived in November 2025, dead when Viral Launch closed in January 2026. The domain now redirects to Intellifox.

One of the giants. It closed with a note on its homepage.

Casey Gauss's Indianapolis launch-and-research platform grew into one of the best-known names in Amazon software. Acquired by Worldeye Technologies in January 2023, it announced in early January 2026 that it had 'officially closed its operations'; the domain now funnels visitors to sister product Intellifox.

The brand died; the database moved in with Tactical Arbitrage.

Ex-Amazonian Justin Maner's Walmart product-research tool: sales estimates, keyword data, and a 14M-product database. Threecolts acquired it around the turn of 2024, piped the data into Tactical Arbitrage, and kept the brand alive until late 2025. Today dataspark.co dumps straight to the Threecolts homepage.

An FBA reimbursement service built in 2017 that became Carbon6's flagship recovery product. Still advertising a $97 plan the funnels can no longer sell.

Peter Valley's online book-arbitrage tool, launched in 2015 and sold to Carbon6 in January 2022 with about $1.1M in annual revenue. After Carbon6 was absorbed by SPS Commerce, this niche tool fell outside the roadmap: the homepage still pitches $97/month, but the signup funnels rot: the free-trial path lands on an empty placeholder page. Valley moved on, launching the repricer NeuroPrice in 2023.

The app still runs; there's just no way to pay.

A desktop-app product research tool that once claimed 4,000 new sellers joining every month. The marketing site collapsed into a bare 'Web Server's Default Page' around May 2025. Yet the desktop app still installs and runs, with no working way left to subscribe. A textbook zombie.

Founder Tom Benattar published the deal terms openly when Carbon6 acquired it in October 2021 for $753,000, about 2.69 times its annual revenue. Pivoted to PPC Ninja; the suite never returned.

How deaths are verified

A tool is only buried here with public proof: an official announcement, credible reporting, or an archived snapshot of the shutdown or redirect. Zombie means the website is still up but the product is demonstrably abandoned or can no longer be bought. Corrections are welcome. If a vendor revives a tool, we dig it back up.
