Fact Checked

A Helium 10 competitor analysis shows you why shoppers buy a rival's product instead of yours. You compare 3 to 5 close competitors on price, sales, keywords, listing, and reviews. Then you turn the gaps into a short list of fixes to test.

To keep it practical, I ran one real audit from start to finish. The test product is a 4-pack of bamboo drawer dividers, checked against the four listings it actually competes with. Every step below uses the same five products, so you can follow along and repeat it for your own ASIN.

Key Takeaways

  • Competitor analysis tells you why shoppers choose a rival, so you fix what actually costs you sales instead of guessing.
  • Helium 10 covers the whole audit in one account, from sales estimates and keyword gaps to listing scores, review complaints, and rank tracking.
  • Platinum covers a small audit for $99 a month billed yearly plus a $19 rank-tracking add-on, while Diamond at $279 suits sellers who audit a whole catalog.

Which Helium 10 Plan Is Best for Competitor Analysis?

Platinum is the best Helium 10 plan for most competitor audits. It costs $99 a month billed yearly and includes every tool in this guide but one. Rank tracking is an add-on from $19 a month. Diamond costs $279 a month, includes rank tracking, and lifts the usage limits. The table compares the two for this job.

One detail changes the math on Platinum. A multi-ASIN Cerebro search counts once for every ASIN you enter. Comparing your product with 4 rivals uses 5 of your 100 monthly searches, so Platinum covers about 20 audits like this one a month.

That's plenty for most single-brand sellers. Diamond starts to make sense when you research a whole catalog every month or run audits for clients. If you aren't hitting Platinum's limits, they're not a reason to upgrade. My Helium 10 pricing guide compares every plan line by line.

Market Tracker vs Market Tracker 360

Market Tracker and Market Tracker 360 sound alike, but they're separate tools. Market Tracker comes with your plan: 3 markets on Platinum and 5 on Diamond. Those are lifetime limits, so pick your markets with care. You build each market from ASINs or keywords. It then shows each product's sales share and market share over time.

Market Tracker 360 costs extra. It's a Diamond add-on from $650 a month, and you buy it through Helium 10's sales team. It tracks whole categories, brands, and keyword sets, with up to 2 years of history. For an audit of 5 products, the Market Tracker in your plan does the job.

1. Identify Your Closest Amazon Competitors

Your closest competitors are the 3 to 5 listings a shopper compares with yours on the same search. They solve the same problem, share the key features, come in a similar pack size, and cost about the same. The best sellers on page one often fail that test, so don't pick by sales alone.

Search your main keyword on Amazon the way a shopper would, then scan page one. For each listing, ask four questions:

  • Same purpose? It solves the same problem for the same buyer.
  • Same key features? Think size, height, material, or whatever spec decides the sale.
  • Same pack size? A 4-pack and a 10-pack aren't the same offer.
  • Similar price? Within about 25% of yours, after coupons.

Want a second opinion? Cerebro and Listing Analyzer both have a Get Competitors button, and the Competitors tab in Black Box lists the top products ranking for the same keywords as your ASIN.

My test product is Fyvva's Spring-Loaded Expandable Bamboo Dividers. It's a 4-pack that fits drawers from 16.9 to 22.2 inches and stands 2.3 inches tall. It sells for $23.99 and has a 4.7-star rating from 317 reviews. On "bamboo drawer dividers," it shows up on page one only as a sponsored result. That makes it a good stand-in for a smaller brand trying to catch up.

These are the four competitors I picked, and why each one made the list:

Competitor

Why it's on the list

Utoplike 4 Pcs Bamboo Kitchen Drawer Dividers

The most-reviewed kitchen divider: same 4-pack, a similar fit range, and over 12,500 reviews.

SpaceAid Bamboo Drawer Dividers with Inserts and Labels

Same 17- to 22-inch range at $23.98, a penny under Fyvva, plus 9 inserts and 30 labels. It's the top seller on the search.

BAMEOS Bamboo Expandable Drawer Dividers, Set of 4

Same pack and range, 2 inches tall, and the highest rating of the four rivals.

ANTOWIN 4 Pcs Expandable Bamboo Drawer Dividers

Same pack and range with 3 small dividers added. It has the lowest rating, which makes its reviews useful.

I skipped several listings that outsell Fyvva, on purpose. The 6-packs for dresser drawers fit 12.5 to 17 inches, so they serve a different drawer. Deep 6- and 8-inch dividers solve a different problem. Bamboo utensil trays aren't dividers at all. Comparing against any of them would skew every number that follows.

Your output: 5 ASINs, yours plus 4 rivals, used in every step below.

2. Compare Prices, Sales Estimates, and Reviews

Xray turns an Amazon search page into one table of prices, estimated sales and revenue, ratings, and review counts. Cut it down to your product and your rivals, and you have a benchmark in about a minute. Treat the sales figures as estimates: Helium 10 models them from each product's Best Sellers Rank.

Run your main keyword search on Amazon, open the Helium 10 extension, and click Xray. Tick the select-all box, untick your product and your 4 rivals, and click Delete. Xray keeps only your group and recalculates the summary at the top, and a refresh brings everything back. Read the ASIN Sales column, not Parent Level Sales, which adds up every size and pack in a listing.

Xray trimmed to the five audit products: SpaceAid sells about 6,308 units a month, nearly 8 times the 823 Fyvva sells.

Three things stand out:

  • The top seller isn't the best-rated. SpaceAid sells about 6,300 units a month, nearly 8 times Fyvva, for a penny less. The obvious difference is what's in the box: inserts and labels.
  • Ratings don't explain the ranking. BAMEOS has a 4.7 rating and 6,713 reviews, yet ANTOWIN sells almost twice as many units with a 4.2.
  • Fyvva punches above its review count. It outsells BAMEOS with 317 reviews against 6,713. Its gap to the leaders is visibility, which is what the keyword step digs into.

Before you trust any single number, check it against Amazon's "bought in past month" badge, which Xray shows as Recent Purchases. Here every estimate landed just above the badge: SpaceAid 6,308 against 6K+, Fyvva 823 against 600+, BAMEOS 559 against 400+. When they disagree, trust the order of the products more than the exact figures. My guide to how accurate Helium 10 is explains where the estimates go wrong.

Your output: a benchmark that shows where your product sits on price, sales, and social proof.

3. Find Competitor Keywords You're Missing

Cerebro lists every keyword your rivals rank for, next to your own rank on each one. Enter up to 10 ASINs, yours first, and it shows each keyword's search volume and every product's organic rank. Then split the results into two lists: keywords you're missing and keywords you rank poorly for.

Put your own ASIN first, because Cerebro's Position (Rank) column always shows the first ASIN's rank. Then add your 4 rivals, or send the whole group over from Xray with Run Cerebro. Mine came back with 6,862 keywords, far too many to act on. These filters cut it down to a list you can use:

  • Search Volume: 400 or more a month.
  • Ranking Competitors (count): at least 2, which shows the term fits this kind of product.
  • Competitor Rank (avg): 1 to 30, so your rivals get real traffic from it.

That left 37 keywords. Now run two passes, because each group needs a different fix.

Keywords You're Missing

A keyword is missing when your rivals rank on page one for it and your product doesn't rank at all. To find these, set Position (Rank) to 0 for both the minimum and the maximum. Most of the time, the words simply aren't in your listing, so Amazon doesn't connect them to you. Fixing that only takes a listing edit.

In my audit, this pass came back almost empty. Its one keyword, "kitchen drawer plate organizer," is a different product. Loosening the filters only added broad terms like "organization" or another brand's name. That's good news: Fyvva's listing already covers the right words. If your list isn't empty, add the missing terms to your title first, then your bullets, then your backend search terms.

Keywords You Rank Poorly For

Some keywords are already in your listing, but you rank past page one for them. Set Position (Rank) to a minimum of 21 to pull them up. Adding the words again won't help, because Amazon already sees them. To climb, you need sales on that keyword. That usually means an ad test, a stronger main image, or a better price.

This is where Fyvva's real problem showed up. Of the 37 keywords, 29 rank at #21 or worse, and on 19 of them Fyvva ranks last of the five. On "bamboo drawer dividers," with 7,580 searches a month, it sits at #62 while the four rivals average #15.5. Cerebro's Title Density shows 23 page-one listings use that exact phrase in their title. Fyvva's title says "Bamboo Dividers" instead.

On bamboo drawer dividers, Fyvva ranks #62 while the four rivals average #15.5, and it ranks last of the five on most of the list.

Pick a short list of 8 to 15 keywords. Favor terms that describe your product exactly and get real search volume. My shortlist:

Missing keywords go into the listing edits in step 6. Keywords you rank poorly for become exact-match ad tests, and Cerebro's suggested bids for this shortlist run $0.87 to $1.15 a click. My Cerebro guide covers the rest of its filters.

Your output: 8 keywords to push with ads and a sharper title, plus any missing terms to add.

4. Find Ways to Improve Your Listing

Listing Analyzer gives your listing a Listing Quality Score from 1 to 10, based on its copy, images, and reviews. Add up to 10 competitor ASINs, and you see their scores in the same report. It's a fast way to catch obvious gaps. The changes that win sales come from reading each listing the way a shopper does.

Enter your ASIN, add your 4 rivals in the competitor field, and run the report. Fyvva scored a perfect 10. So did Utoplike and BAMEOS, and SpaceAid and ANTOWIN scored 9.8. When every listing scores about 10, the score can't tell you why SpaceAid sells nearly 8 times more. Image counts are close too, at 6 to 9 per listing.

All five listings score 9.8 to 10 on Listing Quality Score, so the score cannot explain why SpaceAid sells nearly 8 times more than Fyvva.

So close the tool and open each listing on your phone, the way most shoppers see it. I check four things:

  • Does it explain the benefit? "Stays put without screws" sells. "Sturdy and well-designed" doesn't.
  • Does it show the feature? If the spring is the selling point, one image should show it working.
  • Does it answer the buyer's biggest question? For drawer dividers, that's "Will these fit my drawer?"
  • Does it say why this one? Something in the first two images should set the offer apart.

This is how Fyvva compares with the best rival on each point:

On these listings, Amazon shows only the part of the title before the "|" on the product page, so that first phrase carries the most weight. Mixed messages hurt too. ANTOWIN's title says it fits 17.6 to 21.6 inch drawers, then says 17 to 22 inches a few words later.

The pattern is clear before you read a single review. The leaders answer "Will it fit?" before you ask, and Fyvva leaves you to work it out. That's a listing fix, not a product fix, and it costs nothing to test.

Your output: 3 to 5 listing changes to test, each tied to something a rival does better.

5. Look for Patterns in Competitor Reviews

Review Insights turns a product's reviews into its top positive and negative topics. It also shows how much each topic moves the star rating. Run it on every rival as well as on your own product. Their negative topics show what shoppers wanted and didn't get. That tells you what to fix and what to explain better.

On any Amazon product page, the Helium 10 extension adds a Current Rating box with an Analyze Reviews link. Review Insights reads the last 6 months of reviews for one child ASIN at a time, so pick the exact size and pack you compete with. The topics come from Amazon's own Customer Feedback API. I ran all four rivals plus Fyvva.

ANTOWIN buyers from the last 6 months complain about a weak spring, dividers that fall over, and drawers they do not fit.

Pattern

Where it shows up

Product or communication?

Doesn't fit the drawer ("Dont fit my drawers perfectly," "Definitely not for larger drawers")

SpaceAid (5 mentions), ANTOWIN (2), Fyvva (1)

Communication: the listing didn't help buyers measure

Weak spring, dividers fall over ("weak spring mechanism," "They fall over easily")

SpaceAid (4 mentions), ANTOWIN (3)

Product: no image fixes a weak spring

Missing instructions ("lack of instructions")

Fyvva (1 mention)

Communication: show the setup steps

No negative topics at all

Utoplike, BAMEOS

Both listings spell out which drawers they fit

Six months of reviews means small counts. SpaceAid's top complaint has only 5 mentions. Look for the same complaint across several rivals instead of one big number on one listing.

Sort every pattern into one of two buckets. A communication problem means the product works, but the listing set the wrong expectation. A fit complaint often means the buyer measured the wrong way or picked the wrong size, so an image that shows how to measure fixes it. Fyvva's lone instructions complaint belongs here too.

A product problem means the product itself lets people down. If springs stop holding, no image will save you. That's a conversation with your supplier, and it's also a gap you can sell against. Fyvva's own buyers list Strength as a top positive, so a close-up of its spring holding firm is a selling point it isn't using yet.

Your output: a list of ideas, each labeled product or communication, with reviews to back it up.

6. Turn Your Findings Into an Action Plan

An audit pays off only when it ends in a short list of changes. Put every finding into one table with the action it calls for and a priority. Do the cheap, fast fixes this week. Park the ideas that need money or a supplier until you've checked the cost and the demand.

Fyvva's plan looks like this:

Finding

Action

Priority

Fit complaints hit three of the five listings, and the two that spell out fit have none

Rewrite bullet 1 around measuring, and add an image showing the shortest and longest fit

Do now

Fyvva's buyers praise its strength, while weak springs drag down SpaceAid and ANTOWIN

Add a spring close-up and say how firmly the dividers hold

Do now

One buyer struggled without instructions

Add a 3-step setup image: remove the pin, compress, release

Do now

Fyvva ranks #62 for "bamboo drawer dividers," and 23 page-one titles use that phrase

Put "Bamboo Drawer Dividers" in the visible part of the title

Do now

29 keywords rank at #21 or worse

Run exact-match ad tests on the top 3 by search volume for 2 to 4 weeks

Do next

SpaceAid outsells everyone with inserts and labels at the same price

Price out an inserts bundle before committing

Research first

"Do now" means you can make the change this week with what you already have. "Do next" needs a small budget or some setup. "Research first" needs more data before you spend real money. Make one big change at a time, so you can tell which one moved the numbers.

Your output: a ranked list of improvements, split into quick fixes and bigger bets.

7. Track Competitors and Monitor Your Results

Keyword Tracker and Market Tracker tell you whether your changes worked. Keyword Tracker checks your rank on each keyword every 24 hours, next to up to 5 competitor ASINs. Market Tracker shows the bigger picture: revenue, units sold, reviews, and market share for each product. It also tracks new products that start competing with you.

Neither tool shows history from before you set it up, so do this before you change anything:

  1. Add your ASIN and your keyword shortlist to Keyword Tracker, then add your 4 rivals as competitors. On Platinum, this is the paid add-on from the plan section.
  2. Create a market in Market Tracker by entering your ASIN and your 4 rivals' ASINs. It updates daily from then on.
  3. Start a change log. A spreadsheet with the date and what you changed is enough.

I set up Keyword Tracker for Fyvva before making any changes. On day one, none of its 8 keywords ranked in the top 10 organically, and Fyvva ranked last of the five on 6 of them. That's the baseline every future change gets measured against.

Day one in Keyword Tracker: Fyvva ranks between #16 and #62 on its 8 keywords and last of the five on 6 of them.

Then keep a simple routine. Once a week, spend 15 minutes on rank for your top 5 keywords and any rival price drops or new listings. Once a month, compare market share with the month before and rerun Cerebro to catch new keywords.

Don't credit every rank move to your edits. Rankings shift with the seasons, rival stockouts, coupons, and ad budgets. Wait 2 to 4 weeks after a change, then compare the same days of the week. If a rival ran out of stock that month, your jump may not last.

Your output: a repeatable routine that shows what each change did and what your rivals did in the meantime.

Turn Competitor Research Into Your Next Improvement

You don't need to audit your whole catalog to see results. Pick one product this week, run these 7 steps, and choose the single change with the biggest likely payoff. Make it, log it, and track it for a month. For most sellers, that first fix is a listing edit that costs nothing but an afternoon.

If you're not on Helium 10 yet, code REVENUEGEEKS20 takes 20% off your first 6 months when you sign up through our discount link. First-time subscribers also get a 7-day money-back guarantee, which is enough time to run this audit on your own product.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you do competitor analysis on Helium 10's free plan?

Only a small one, and without keyword research. The free plan gives you limited Xray access, 2 Listing Analyzer searches a month, and 1 Market Tracker market. Cerebro isn't included, so the keyword step needs a paid plan.

Can Helium 10 show a competitor's PPC keywords?

Partly, through Cerebro's Sponsored Rank columns. They show where your group of ASINs appears in sponsored results for each keyword, so you can see which terms rivals pay for. They don't show bids or ad spend.

Can Helium 10's AI agent run a competitor analysis?

It can pull much of the data for you, on Diamond only. Helium, the built-in AI agent, answers questions from your live Helium 10 data, including where a competitor is gaining on you. Our Helium 10 AI agent guide has prompts you can copy.

Is Helium 10 or SmartScout better for competitor analysis?

Helium 10 for single listings, SmartScout for whole brands. Helium 10 goes deeper on keyword gaps, listing scores, and reviews for specific ASINs. SmartScout maps which brands own a category and how they get traffic. My SmartScout vs Helium 10 comparison breaks down the rest.
